Digestive Discomfort: A Homeopathic Approach to Treatment and Dietary Regimen

Food plays a vital role in maintaining sound health.  Protein is an essential component of a balanced diet that builds muscles and provides energy to work all day long. Sources of plant-based proteins in our diet include grains like wheat, barley, rye, oats, etc. However, some of us may be sensitive to certain foods.

Before diving into the therapeutic information for digestive discomfort, let us first begin by discussing dietary regimen.

Some quick information for gluten free plant based resources:

Some of us may have sensitivity to certain foods, such as gluten. Thus to meet daily dietary requirements we need to rely on alternative gluten free plant-based sources of protein. The good news is that there are several alternate sources of protein available including lentils, buckwheat, rice, amaranth, tapioca, water chestnut, nuts, hemp, chia, and flax seeds, etc. that are good to consume for those with gluten related disorders and for everyone else, in general. Some of these are not only gluten free but also are a rich source of essential fatty acids and dietary fibres. This supports your immune system, nervous system, and metabolism, and keeps you healthy.

Amaranth Halwa: An easy and delicious gluten free dessert recipe from India

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of butter or ghee (clarified butter)

  • 200 grams amaranth flour

  • 100-150mL water or milk

  • 2-3 tablespoons jaggery, brown sugar or white sugar

  • chopped nuts (cashews, almonds, etc.)

  • 1 teaspoon cardamom

Method:

  • Heat 2 tablespoons of butter/clarified butter (ghee) in a pan on medium-low heat, until melted.

  • Add 200 grams of amaranth flour to the pan, stir and roast it for 8-10 minutes until the flour turns light brown in colour.

  • Then add 100-150 mL of water or milk and stir continuously to prevent lumps from forming.

  • Once it becomes a little thicker, add about 2-3 tablespoons of jaggery, brown sugar, or white sugar or more to taste.

  • Keep stirring to mix well, and cook for another 3-4 minutes on low heat until the sugar dissolves.

  • Remove from heat, and garnish with chopped nuts (cashews, almonds, etc.) and 1 teaspoon of cardamom powder to taste.

Serve warm and enjoy on cold wintery days!

Homeopathic treatment for digestive discomforts:

The symptoms of digestive discomfort may include indigestion, difficult assimilation, bloating, cramps, gas, heartburn, loose bowel movements, constipation etc. Even with a healthy meal, when nutrients are not absorbed properly in the gut for any reason, it may lead to anemia and can result in tiredness.

Homeopathy offers a wide range of remedies to treat digestive issues triggered by different food items. These may include bread, cake, rye bread, oats, porridge or any common food or drink, from A to Z!

For example, stomach upset may occur after consuming acidic food, beer, cheese, eggs, fatty food, ice cream and more. If you find that your stomach gets upset after drinking milk, or you experience bloating after having food, or bloating accompanied by repeated burps or headaches, a homeopathic solution may be appropriate.

Homeopathic medicine takes an individualistic approach to resolving digestive issues. It addresses not only the symptoms but also the underlying cause of the problem, treating the person as a whole. Once the root cause is treated, the remedy strengthens the immune system and restores health.
